improve ER efficiency and access to care

Let us care for your mental health patients

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there are 136.3 million visits to the emergency room every year. As many as 1 in 8 of these visits involve mental health complaints.

It is often challenging to appropriately handle psychiatric patients in an emergency setting. Lack of time and resources (especially mental health specialists) frequently lead to less than optimal outcomes. Patients with mental health concerns can demand significant resources from emergency departments leading to longer wait times and decreased throughput.

Synapse can help to solve the problem of diagnosing and treating mental health cases in emergency departments. Our skilled professionals can rapidly assess patients in crisis and make specific disposition recommendations to the team. This will lead to shorter wait times, increased throughput, and cost savings.

How it Works

  1. A patient with a mental health complaint is identified by triage.
  2. ER staff contacts the Synapse hotline.
  3. Within minutes a caring and knowledgeable mental health provider will assess the patient.
  4. Recommendations are delivered to the primary team allowing safe and efficient disposition.

Follow On Care

A significant fraction of ER patients with mental health complaints do not need hospitalization. Many of these consumes do need additional resources to help manage their condition. Synapse can help these patients by facilitating outpatient visits (virtual or in person) with mental health providers within a few days of the initial consultation.
